TYPE 1 DIABETES

Type 1 diabetes is also called insulin-dependent diabetes. It used to be called juvenile-onset diabetes, because it often begins in childhood.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition. It’s caused by the body attacking its own pancreas with antibodies. In people with type 1 diabetes, the damaged pancreas doesn’t make insulin.

Maintaining a healthy diet is important for type 1 diabetes management. A type 1 diabetes diet is designed to provide maximum nutrition, while also monitoring intake of carbohydrates, protein, and fat.

People with type 1 diabetes need to monitor their blood sugar levels. Without proper diet, exercise, and insulin therapy, a person with type 1 diabetes could experience health complications.

Dietitian can help you come up It’s easy to reach for fast food and other processed foods when you’re short on time and money.

However, these foods offer minimal nutrients and are high in fat, sugar, and salt. Planning meals ahead of time and grocery shopping regularly can help cut down on any “emergency eating with meal plans and create a diet that works for you in the long term.

An important aspect of any diabetic diet is consistency. To maintain blood sugar levels:

  • don’t skip meals
  • try to eat around the same time each day
  • pay attention to food labels

TYPE 2 DIABETES

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose) — an important source of fuel for your body.

With type 2 diabetes, your body either resists the effects of insulin — a hormone that regulates the movement of sugar into your cells — or doesn’t produce enough insulin to maintain normal glucose levels.

Type 2 diabetes used to be known as adult-onset diabetes, but today more children are being diagnosed with the disorder, probably due to the rise in childhood obesity. There’s no cure for type 2 diabetes, but losing weight, eating well and exercising can help manage the disease. If diet and exercise aren’t enough to manage your blood sugar well, you may also need diabetes medications or insulin therapy.

Type 2 diabetic diet include complex carbohydrates such as brown rice, whole wheat, quinoa, oatmeal, fruits, vegetables, beans, and lentils. Foods to avoid include simple carbohydrates, which are processed, such as sugar, pasta, white bread, flour, and cookies, pastries.

Foods with a low glycemic load (index) only cause a modest rise in blood sugar and are better choices for people with diabetes. Good glycemic control can help in preventing long-term complications of type 2 diabetes.

Protein provides steady energy with little effect on blood sugar. It keeps blood sugar stable, and can help with sugar cravings and feeling full after eating. Protein-packed foods to eat include beans, legumes, eggs, seafood, dairy, peas, tofu, and lean meats and poultry.

Blood tests showed signs of high sugar. Medical tests confirmed this and moreover detected our child as a T1D. Doctors gave their best to administer dosages and ensure that we understood the Dos and Don’ts. Here comes the game changer — The right Nutritionist. I am really thankful to Dr Shilpa Joshi for accepting our request to Administer our child’s journey from the hba1c of 14.4 to 7.1. Initially we were confused why we were not given any meal plans, but with time we really understood her method — 1) It’s a deficiency 2) Cook and make your child eat anything and everything (healthy) 3) Carb counting 4) Transparency is the key 5) Make your child eat out 6) leading a normal life Importantly we realised that we ourselves were eating an imperfect diet and there was an urgent need of a nutritionist like Dr. Shilpa Joshi.

I have faced the issue of being overweight since I was a child and there was never an explanation for it as to why was I gaining so much weight. Thereafter the issues piled up so much that it messed up with my menstruation cycle. A few years later a word came in my life “PCOS” which went onto become the answer to my every problem but doctors and dietician had no solution to it other than me starving myself, losing my glow and hair along the way and losing weight the wrong way until Shilpa Joshi, RD was introduced to me. For years I followed diets like they were some sort of punishment for me but with Shilpa’s diet, it is like I finally found solutions to my every problem while still eating the most healthy but the most stomach filling food. The diet not only helped me lose weight but also helped me with my menstruation cycle, my skin glow and my hair shine. For the first time, the diet has become a part of my lifestyle and a part of my daily diet other than just following it for the sake of weight loss.

I have been living in US/Canada for the last decade and working in Diabetes- so as my mum's control deteriorated I began to worry anticipating comorbidities. I strongly believe that the right diet is crucial for bringing control to T2 patients. Knowing fully well that patient adherence is strongly linked to the patient understanding I was looking for a credible dietitian with the ability to explain concepts to someone like my mother (very basic understanding of the disease state and limited attention span). This is when my colleague, a former president of the ADA recommended that I take my mum to see Shilpa in one of my trips to Mumbai. Shilpa Joshi, RD explained the basic diabetes principles, the impact of Carbs on Glucose levels, and gave her a diet based on her glucose readings that were simple, flexible and very local. My mum still goes to her for quarterly follow-ups and has seen better results. I would strongly recommend anyone to Shilpa

Shilpa Joshi, RD was referred to me after I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 30. Right off the bat she was immensely comforting and reassuring that my life is going to go back to the way it was. Through the course of 5 sessions, she taught me how to count carbohydrates and how to accurately determine my carb-insulin ratio. She also focused on the characteristics of a lot of Indian foods for which you can’t readily find information online. Through these sessions and a few follow up ones, she has geared me into tackling the daily food decisions that come with Type 1 Diabetes without overthinking it. She’s comforting, approachable and always available when you need her. I am grateful to have met her and am better off because of it.

Diet in diabetes; most people think - No sugar , No sweet , No rice , No potatoes, even the practicing Dieticians feel diabetic diet what's the rocket science involved it's easy and they provide the same diet plan for all, infact diet plan for type- I and type - II are almost same and the results are pathetic. Then I decided to go in detail about insulin therapy and diet planning for diabetics and found it was completely different and i suggest, it should be a mandatory session for all clinical dietitians who deal with diabetes. I thank Dr. Shilpa Joshi who given the comprehensive education and Practical application with all essential calculations for planning a result oriented diet plan according to insulin therapy. We long for more such sessions.

Mrs. Shilpa Joshi, RD & CDE conducted a carbohydrate counting training workshop for the practicing dietitians of Surat in December 2018. The workshop was not only very informative but also backed with recent scientific evidence. The practical tips that she gave helped all the dietitians to implement the medical nutrition therapy principles into the practice. The topics like types of insulin, how to plan meals based on the different insulin regimen, carbs exchanges, calculations of ICR, SF etc.were very well explained by her. She simplified the complicated subject & that surely made things easier for all the dietitians.I thanked her for conducting such educative workshop which is the result of her years of experience with us. The workshop is definitely worth attending & gives very practical solutions to the day to day problems faced by the people with diabetes. I strongly recommend it to all the practicing dietitians.

Thank you very much for the extremely interactive and practical session on ‘Right Nutrition Choices’ taken by you at our Exeltis HO at Mumbai. The program was telecast LIVE to our Chennai Office and Plant as well, where we had more than 100 colleagues witnessing the very simplistic method in which you elaborated pointers on the right nutrition and risk factors. The comments I have received about your session has been very encouraging and more importantly they loved the practical approach that you brought about in your slides. Many ‘quick wins’ that you highlighted have already being put into action by a few of my team members, which speaks of the impact your session had. Thanks once again and Congratulations for the effort. Keep spreading this message in the lucid style that you bring into your sessions.

I was appr 97 kgs when I started seriously thinking about weight loss. I took up to playing badminton, to begin with, and as a result, lost 7 kgs in the next few months. While I continued to play, the weight loss stopped. I got a recommendation to consult Shilpa Joshi, RD and that would turn out to be a key trigger for me. The key issue she had was to ensure that I have enough energy to play and also reduce calorie intake to ensure weight loss. She ensured that the diet plan will provide me enough energy to continue to play and also lose weight. The diet plan involved eating normal stuff which is available at all households and no powder or food was recommended which was a quick fix or medicine to burn fat. I am happy to say that today I weigh 80 kgs, have enough energy to continue playing my sport and also eat enough to fill my stomach. All credit to Dr. Joshi to have helped me in achieving this goal."
